Day 14 In Adelaide

This day started with a lovely hotel breakfast and all eight in our travel company decided to go to the Adelaide Central Market. Mikael's former host Kieran's daughter and son in law have a stall there where they sell vegetables. They are on vacation but once we arrived we easily identified Adrian's son Tom who also works there, so we all went there in turns and talked to him. We also but some really fine fruit from them. I found a wonderful little bookshop, with both old and new books and could not resist buying one of my childhood favorites in an English translation. I now go home with a copy of Mrs Pepperpott, in Swedish known as Teskedsgumman.

After strolling around the market for an hour we went to the Botanical garden. Also here in Adelaide they have the clever system with a free zone on the tram in the central city, so it is very easy to get around to the tourist attractions on the tram. It was a rather warm day, well over 30 and the shadow of the trees in the botanical garden was a wise choice for the day. They also have a lovely small museum of history of botany, and the use of plants in the garden. The museum is located in the original building from 1880s and it was built to be a museum and has always been used for that purpose. Even the original showcases are there, but the contents have been upgraded to a modern exhibitions on plants and the uses of plants. There is also a fantastic collection of 19th century papier mache fruits, bought to the garden from a maker in Germany. The company still exists and provided the new exhibition with new papier mache fruits that matched the new content!

Alice and I had booked hight tea at the hotel, so we went back to the hotel from the garden and then we went to tea. The concierge had forgotten to pass on our booking it turned out, but they fixed that and we had a delicious high tea, with all you can expect and little more. There were finger sandwiches, scones, cream and jam, and pastries, but also some hot savories such as vol-au-vent and curry puff. It was all very yummy, even if I think the curry puff flavor was a bit too dominant to be part of high tea. A nice glas of local, pink, sparkling wine was also included.

After tea we had a little siesta, I took a swim in the pool and I discovered that Australian TV broadcasts the latest series of Dr Who! And on wifi it is possible to watch already broadcasted episodes, so I immediately started to watch some Dr Who. Very pleasant siesta!

In the evening we had booked a place that a local Mikael met on the plane here recommended, the bar and restaurant 2KW. It turned out it is just around the corner from the hotel and we managed to book all eight in. It was a rather fancy, and modern place with a roof terrace. Our table was not on the terrace, but we had some view. The concept was a menu picked by the chef for 70 AUD per person. We had a six course dinner, plus a small dessert with lots of interesting dishes. The main was lamb, with caramelised mint sauce and roast potatoes, with warm vegetables. Like a super-refined Sunday roast, all the same flavors but much, much better. Before that we had fermented vegetables, sashimi, burrata and a lovely fish, Murray Cod, with fermented and charred cabbage. We also were recommended good wines with it and we went back with a feeling that we could not eat another bit and probably would not have to eat more for the next couple of days. And we would never have found this place if Mikael had not talked to the person in the next seat on the plane, it was a really small door with a security guard so it was not a place we would have found!
